Winter is a season associated with snowmen, skiing, ice-skating, and enjoying the warmth of a fireplace at the end of a day’s outdoor activities. The winter weather that allows us to enjoy these outdoor pleasures also poses a threat to our well-being when we don’t heed the basic safety cold weather precautions listed below. So, take the time to familiarize yourself with the National Weather Service terms associated with winter storms and to review the winter safety tips intended to help you prepare for severe winter weather.
TERMS TO KNOW
• Winter Storm Watch: Severe winter conditions, such as heavy snow and or ice, are possible within the next day or two. Prepare now.
• Winter Storm Warning: Severe winter weather conditions have begun or are about to begin in your area. Stay indoors.
• Blizzard Warning: Snow and strong winds will combine to produce a blinding snow (near zero visibility), deep drifts, and life threatening wind chill. Seek refuge immediately.
• Winter Weather Advisory: Winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous. If caution is exercised, these situations should not become life-threatening.
• Frost/Freeze Warning: Below freezing temperatures are expected and may cause significant damage to plants, crops, or fruit trees.
PREPARING BEFORE THE STORM
AT HOME: Primary concerns are the potential loss of heat, power, telephone, and shortage of supplies if storm conditions continue for more than a day.
HAVE AVAILABLE:
• Flashlight and spare batteries.
• Battery powered NOAA weather radio and a portable radio.
• One week supply of food and water, canned and or dried foods are desired in the event electrical power is lost.
• If you rely on medication, you should have at least a one weeks supply on hand.
• First-aid kit and a fire extinguisher.
• Extra blankets and or a sleeping bags.
• Keep a shovel indoors in the event you become snow bound.
YOUR VEHICLE: Plan your travel and check the latest weather reports to avoid the storm.
HAVE AVAILABLE IN YOUR VEHICLE:
• Blankets/sleeping bags
• Flashlight with extra batteries
• First-aid kit and fire extinguisher
• A two day supply of non-perishable food and water
• Small shovel, pocketknife and a tool kit
• Tow rope
• Booster cables
• Bag of sand or cat litter
• Windshield scrapper and brush
• Extra set of clothes
• Compass and road map
• Matches
• Tissues and paper towels
IMPORTANT TIPS:
• Keep your gas tank and windshield washing fluid reservoir full and use gas line antifreeze.
• Try not to travel alone.
• Let someone know your timetable and travel route.
• If you have a cell phone number, leave it with a friend or relative.
• Ensure your windshield wipers are in good condition.
IF YOU BECOME STRANDED IN YOUR VEHICLE:
• Stay in vehicle: DO NOT leave the vehicle to search for assistance unless assistance is visible.
• Occasionally run the engine to keep warm. Beware of carbon monoxide poisoning, and always make sure the exhaust pipe is clear.
• Exercise your hands, arms and legs. Do not stay in one position for an extended period of time.
• Place a bright colored cloth or flag outside the vehicle and tie if off to the windshield wiper or antenna. |
